Discovered and illustrated by Brian Loomes, this is a very interesting small single handed longcase by Johnathon Savage of Clifton, made from around c1740. In 1745 Johnathon Savage was a hero when the Savage family were beseiged by warring armies during the last battle fought on English soil as the Scots armies, headed by Bonnie Prince Charlie, retreated during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. A letter written by Thomas Savage (Jonathons Father) gives a fascinating account of the events. There is also a very rare and interesting book by James Ray of Whitehaven that comes with this clock. James Ray, a noted chronicler of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion served as a volunteer in the forces of the Duke of Cumberland from Stafford to the Battle of Culloden. This book published in 1746 in Manchester, is considered to be the best contemporary account of the campaign and of the state of feeling in England. In his account of the skirmish at Clifton Moor, he writes that had it not been for Johnathon Savages actions during the skirmish, the Kings men would have received considerable damage. However eleven of the Kings men were killed and twenty nine wounded. Of the rebels five lay dead in the field and locals say they saw about thirty dead rebels thrown into the river...........

A wonderfully small proportioned and very original, honey coloured oak case by Charles Raymond of Lydeway, (near Devizes). The 10 inch square brass dial with fine engraving to the centre, retains its original single iron hand. The birdcage movement has outside countwheel. Standing only 76 inches tall to the top of its original caddy. Made around c1760 this clock recently came from a thatched cottage in Lydeway where it had stood for over 180 years

When I first bought this clock , I decided to research its history and got more than I bargained for.............
